The tutorial is overall excellent, way better than usual. I have been playing with Pi’s, IOT and Python for a number of years and I got the whole thing up and running with little trouble, so I cannot say how easy it will be for someone who has no such experience. As other reviewers have said, follow the instructions diligently and you should be OK. Let’s be honest, though, you are dealing with pretty complex stuff setting up the Pi and the Client-Server interfaces if you have never done it before.

The kit arrived well packaged, complete and damage-free. You sure get a lot for your money! Every component worked correctly. If you think something is not right, work on the assumption that YOU have done something wrong, so power down and recheck every connection and re-read the instructions. It is very unlikely that a component is bad out of the box (that’s my 45 years of electronics experience talking). It may be bad now, though, if you connected it wrong!

When it comes to the batteries, the tutorial makes it very clear that you must buy high quality 18650’s. Unfortunately that is not easy since the majority of cells from eBay or Amazon are fakes. If it says more than 2200mAh or is cheap, it’s a fake. I am using genuine Samsung cells now, started out using cheaper cells I had lying around which were a dead loss. With 13 servos running the current drain is high and fake cells will drain rapidly giving all sorts of problems. The battery holder really grabs hold of the cells so take care. If you use good cells, you shouldn’t need to take them out (I haven’t) since the charging function via USB-C seems to work fine. I do notice the Pi reports lo volts even though there are still 4 bars on the charge indicator.

I suggest you leave everything in the box and work on loading up your Pi FIRST. Load a brand new OS onto a microSD, connect the Pi’s HDMI to a monitor, connect a wireless mouse and keyboard, and then power it up. Do all the downloads and config changes the tutorial says and then become familiar with terminal mode and the directories that hold the Python programs. Point being that if you can’t get this far, constructing the thing is kind of pointless. No problem – take your time going back over the tutorial (it is very good, errors are easy to spot) and you will get there and learn a lot on the way.

Assembly went well, but the M2 screws are really tiny! Use tape where it says to use tape! Once the Pi is mounted, install the batteries and give them a good charge. Still using the monitor connection and terminal mode, run the servo initialize and mount all the arms at close to 90deg. Then run the function test programs to check all the devices. I found all the programs and devices performed correctly, although I did some editing.

The server/client business is not without its challenges. I first used a windows PC on which to set up VNC and Client. It all works as the tutorial says but the exact sequence of actions is critical. Write down the sequence from power-up all through every time you try so that once you get it all working you have the last correct sequence all written down (no, you won’t remember!). Then carefully calibrate the legs per tutorial – this is critical if you want it to walk correctly! I then ran it from both an Ipad and Samsung tablet (which I prefer) so now I can start up and play with the dog using ONLY the one device.

Now I am ready to see what I can really get it to do! Well done, Freenove people, you put a lot of work into it.

  3. Robin

its was fun and i finished it but it was not worth 130€ excluding the 50€ raspberry pi and 30€ battery
quality of the servos and other parts was really underwhelming and the finished result was very very disappointing it cant even walk it just stumbles around and falls over i spent a hour calibrating it and got it sort of working but its really disappointing and slow does NOT work as advertised it over priced and not worth 130€ for just a few plastic pieces cheep servos and bad/very limited software don’t recement.

Krijg snel reactie.

I am a seasoned roboticist with extended experience in building robots from commercial kits as well as my creations.
Searching for an inexpensive micro controller for my students, I stumbled on a cute and inexpensive robot called Micro Rover by Freenove, based on the ubiquitous BBC MicroBit card.
I then realized that this company offered other, more sophisticated robots based on Arduino and Raspberry Pi at a very competitive price.
I tried a few and the last I built is the Robot Dog for which I’m writing this review.
This Kit is one of the best I have ever built.
It consist of no less than thirteen servos, a Pi Camera, an ultrasonic sensor, some RGB LEDs, sturdy laser cut body parts, all the necessary cables, connectors and accessories plus a well-designed PCB that connects everything together.
As a bonus, Freenove provides an outstanding instruction booklet in PDF format (122 page with clear pictures, codes and data tables).
This kit may be a little daunting for rank beginners, but it is so well designed, built and documented that I would unconditionally recommend it for anybody interested in learning how modern autonomous robots are built, programmed and controlled.
It runs on two easy to find 18650 3.7V batteries and it needs a Raspberry Pi as a controlling SBC (Single Board Computer).
This is not a frustrating kit with missing parts, incomprehensible instructions and inexistent customer support.
Even in the remote case of you getting stuck, Freenove offers excellent personalized online help.
